INSTALLATION
Questions about how to hang wallpaper, book un-pasted paper or remove old wallpaper? Answers to these and many more questions about installing
and caring for wallcoverings, can be found below.

Where do you start papering in a room? At the corner, or in the middle of a wall?
Start papering at the least visible corner; the pattern will most likely not match when you get back to the starting point. A good place to start is usually in the corner closest to the entryway.

Do I need to use a solid vinyl or paper-backed vinyl in a bathroom or high traffic area?
No. In a bathroom with proper ventilation, you should be able to use any York Wallcovering. All York papers (with the exception of natural fibers) are either solid vinyl or vinyl protected, and therefore washable. In a high traffic area all papers are vulnerable to scratching and gouging. For additional durability use a commercial grade vinyl.

How much does wallpaper expand when it gets wet? Will it shrink and pull away at the seams when it dries?

Depending on type, wallpaper can expand its width up to 1/4 inch. In order to avoid expansion on the wall, which can cause bubbling and wrinkles, it is necessary to "book" the paper before hanging. "Booking" is the process whereby an un-pasted paper that has been pasted, or a pre-pasted paper that has been dipped in water, is folded onto itself, paste-to-paste, and allowed to relax for several minutes before applying to the wall. This allows the paper to fully expand, relaxing its curl, and in the case of a pre-pasted paper, it allows the prepaste to fully activate. A notable exception to this process is our revolutionary new SureStrip and Easy2 papers which do not expand when wet, and are engineered for easier installation and removal.

What does the match and pattern repeat affect? Do I need to measure differently?
The pattern match and repeat affect the hanging method, the waste amount and the total amount of paper needed for a job. Generally speaking, the larger the repeat, the greater the chance for waste, but a drop match of the same repeat would have less waste than a straight match.

Why are the rolls different sizes? Will I get more paper on a wider roll?
York Wallcovering produces paper on two roll sizes: 20 1/2 inches wide by 33 feet long and 27 inches wide by 27 feet long. The roll size is determined by the printing process used to create the paper. There is approximately the same amount of square footage on each roll. Back to top

How do I avoid seeing white seams when hanging paper?

When a paper with a dark backgound is hung on a lighter wall, exposed seams can be either a result of seeing the wall behind the paper, or seeing the white edge of the paper. York has begun to print many of our dark background papers on a gray substrate to correct the latter problem.

What is the difference between primer and sizing? Why do I need to use it?
Primer is a protectant/sealer for your wall which prevents the paste from absorbing into porous surfaces, and allows the paste to grip on slick surfaces. Sizing provides additional grip for better adherence and more slip for ease of sliding each strip into position on the wall. Many products on the market today are a combination sealer/sizer; these one-step ‘universal’ wallcovering primers are easier to use and are formulated to work on a variety of surfaces under varying conditions. Sealing the surface is an important procedure to allow for future removal.

Why are some papers prepasted and others unpasted? Which is better?
There is really no quality difference between York’s pre-pasted papers and our un-pasted papers. All of York’s Wallcoverings are of superior grade material. The main difference comes down to installation preference. Most of our papers are pre-pasted for the convenience of the do-it-yourself homeowner. Our designer papers are often un-pasted because they are more typically installed by professional paper hangers who have a preference for pasting the papers. One other class of unpasted papers is our new super strippable Easy2 wallcoverings. These revolutionary new papers can be installed by pasting the wall or the paper and will remove from the wall in one single piece when time to redecorate.

What do you recommend for washing wallpaper? Which papers are better for washing often?
York Wallcoverings recommends washing all solid vinyl and vinyl protected papers with either diluted dish detergent water or a general purpose spray cleaner diluted half and half with water. Always use a soft cloth or sponge, NEVER use anthing abrasive. The best papers for scrubability are commercial vinyl and residential solid vinyl, however, these are seldom a necessity in a residential setting.
